Role Purpose
This role will business partner the Sector Manufacturing Director to ensure robust financial management and controls. It will focus both on near term performance and have a direct influence on the strategic direction of the sector playing a critical part in setting the direction of the portfolio and managing it through the IBP process. It will ensure efficient and consistent structures and processes are in place across the sector Finance team to deliver insight into performance and provide decision support to the senior leadership team. It will ensure that the internal control environment is robust and implemented in line with group policy and assessed to ensure it is appropriate for the sector’s risks.
Key Accountabilities
Team
- Ensure their team has the right structure and capability to deliver effectively for the business.
- Provide leadership and direction to ensure the team is engaged, focused, developed, delivering to their potential and operating as high performing team
- Support and coach their Senior FCs in developing and managing their own teams.
- Collaborate with other senior leaders in Finance to drive the overall development, effectiveness and strategy of the Finance team.
Portfolio
- Work closely with the cross-functional portfolio teams to develop portfolio and category strategies, drive performance, insight and robust strategic decision-making, considering both short and long term horizons.
- Influence senior operational, commercial and technical colleagues including directors and the Exec to drive the strategic direction of the business.
- Be a driving force to ensure the sector’s long term strategic plan is robust and balanced, with full cross-functional engagement
Operational Excellence
- Through insight, analysis and challenge drive further improvements in OpEx delivery.
- Drive operational excellence across the sector, ensuring appropriate tracking and controls are in place.
- Ensure OpEx is tested and challenged to confirm robustness and consistency
Insight & Decision Making
- Provide challenge to the Sector SLT, ensuring robust decision-making is in place, act as the financial conscience for the Manufacturing Operations Director and the SLT.
- Business partner the sector leadership team ensuring robust analysis and insight is provided.
- Provide leadership to the sector and support the Sector Manufacturing Operations Director in setting direction, managing change and motivating the wider team.
- Optimise operational performance through close monitoring and play a lead role in the IBP process to ensure effective business planning.
- Educate stakeholders to increase financial awareness across the sector.
Reporting
- Manage all sector Finance reporting ensuring it is robust, insightful and delivers at the appropriate level.
- Ensure consistency with the sector and work with other Heads of Finance to ensure consistency across sectors.
Forecasting/Budgeting
- Manage all sector forecasting and budgeting, work closely with the Senior FC Central to ensure appropriate timeline setting and stakeholder management.
- Along with the Sector Manufacturing Operations Director, establish appropriate and challenging targets for the Sector.
- Identify, manage and mitigate and risks or opportunities to current plans both short and long term.
Synergies
- Support synergy analysis, business case production, implementation and tracking.
- Recommend and prioritise related activities and available resources.
- Influence and challenge stakeholders to ensure robust yet challenging forecasts and plans
Capital
- Ensure capital proposals within sector are robust in all aspects so that appropriate investment decisions are made.
- Ensure capitals are robustly reviewed and approved or rejected.
- Ensure policies are implemented, cash forecasting is challenged and accurate and reporting informative
- Alongside the Sector Manufacturing Operations Director, set the sector capital budget ensuring appropriate balancing of cash, operational targets and risk.
Controls
- Own the financial internal controls to ensure vulnerabilities are minimised and a continuous improvement plan is delivered.
- Educate and influence cross-functional stakeholders to ensure appropriate controls are in place, understood and adhered to.
- Support the development and implementation of policies (eg Capex) to ensure they accurately reflect the needs of the business and provide guidance to relevant stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement
- Drive a continuous improvement mindset within own team to ensure activities are as efficient and effective as possible.
- Drive finance strategy particularly with regard to systems improvements for reporting and forecasting.
- Drive alignment and standardisation across the finance team in order to maximise efficient use of resource and quality outputs, this includes working with the Commercial, Procurement, FSS & FP&A Finance teams.
- Be an advocate for any strategic transformation programmes such as MBE or Project Vision
Projects
- Support initiatives and projects across Operations Finance as required
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Qualifications: A fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with a demonstrable history of success in operational finance and senior leadership roles. The ideal candidate will possess a strong grounding in financial principles including manufacturing accounting and best practice reporting.
- Industry Expertise: Direct experience within the food manufacturing sector, including familiarity with the complexities of large-scale production environments.
- Analytical Skills: Advanced financial modelling and data analysis abilities, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality, accurate outputs under pressure. Demonstrable experience of managing complex reporting, forecasting and budgeting processes. The role demands acute attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret and communicate financial data effectively to non-finance stakeholders.
- Stakeholder Management: Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrable experience of influencing, negotiating, and collaborating across multi-functional teams at a senior level. The successful candidate will be adept at building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including finance colleagues, senior management, operational leaders, and external partners.
- Team Management: Extensive experience of building, leading and developing a large, high performing team.
- Proactive, organised and able to work flexibly in order to meet deadlines and have the drive to deliver results. Experience of co-ordinating the work of multiple professional accountants
- Systems Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint and an understanding of ERP systems. Experience in reporting systems such as Power BI or Qlik would be an advantage.

Colleagues in central/support functions whose roles are at risk of redundancy and who accept a new role can continue working from their current location, in accordance with our location guidance, where feasible.
